In a refugee camp that is home to 350 Muslim families, our partner saw a real and practical need: women’s counseling.
Most refugee women have little to no resources with which to work through their personal trauma. In most camps, there are no programs or resources or tools for therapy and healing. So our partner decided to open their doors to 40 women for the camp’s very first women’s trauma healing program.
The refugee camp manager quickly saw the difference the program was making. She reached out to our partner and asked if they could extend their program to all women in the camp. Forty women soon turned to 600 women, as all were eager to receive counseling and healing from the sexual, physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma and abuse they had been experiencing, in some cases, for years.
In being forced to flee, refugees endure fear, robbery, torture, imprisonment, family separation, rape, and loss of livelihood. The Middle East is a culture marked by community and connection. Refugees’ deepest trauma is often the betrayal they feel at the hands of their own people and nation. Neighbors, classmates, colleagues, friends, and even family were turned against each other in a race for survival during the recent occupation by the Islamic State’s failed caliphate.
Our partner’s trauma healing program, like many others, seeks to help women work through the pain and slowly find ways to rebuild their lives and learn to trust again.
Please pray for the women who are attending the trauma healing program
- Pray that they find healing, love, and mercy, and that their lives can begin anew.
- Pray that they are open to the gospel of Jesus.
- Pray for the emotional and spiritual well-being of facilitators and trainers as they care for women and their families.
